Social and community psychiatry, rehabilitation

The aim of social and community psychiatry is to understand and treat mental disturbances in relation with their social environment. Ciompi contributed to the development of social psychiatry by his research on rehabilitation, by a new conceptualision of crisis intervention and prevention, by proposing a emotion-based understanding of mental illness which integrates psychological, social and biological aspects (see the concept of affect logic), and by the creation of community-based ambulatory and semi-ambulatory services for rehabilitation and crisis-intervention in the Lausanne and Berne area. In 1984, he also created the still successfully operating therapeutic community Soteria Berne for the milieu-therapeutic treatment of acute schizophrenic psychoses.
